Markets are confused over the odds of a U.S. recession, and "somebody has got it wrong," according to hedge fund manager David Neuhauser. Except I think that [the] forward path — are we going to see things start to fall off a cliff? Or are we going to, sort of, glide path down and corporate earnings are going to be sheltered from the storm?" An intensifying bond rout is piling pressure on the global economy and creating a "tremendously dangerous" outlook for equities, the chief investment officer of Livermore Partners hedge fund said Friday. Bond yields move inversely to prices. That, in turn, has pushed bond yields higher and sapped money from government budgets by raising borrowing costs. In Germany, Europe's largest economy, yields have hit their highest level since the 2011 euro zone debt crisis. "I think that is going to cause a lot of pain moving forward in terms of the economy," Neuhauser said.

And hedge fund manager David Neuhauser of Livermore Partners told CNBC's " Street Signs Asia " that the "best asset class" is oil stocks. Typically, in a recession, oil prices could dive to $50 a barrel, he said. Stocks to buy Neuhauser said Livermore owns small-cap energy stocks Kolibri Global and Vista Energy — because of limited supply and strong returns on capital, as well as low valuations. Still, energy stocks are an option for investors seeking inflation protection, Dietze said. He said energy stocks are "a far superior alternative" to Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities.

For nearly 100 years, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has showcased the biggest words from the youngest lexicologists. The words have only gotten harder, the pressure greater and the national spotlight larger. The finals cap nearly a week of competition at the National Harbor, a resort and waterfront development in Maryland. Many Americans grew familiar with the bee from its national broadcast on ESPN, where it expanded in popularity, viewership and pop culture over the past few decades. But that changed last year when the bee moved to Ion, a Scripps subsidiary, in the hopes of finding viewers beyond paid TV subscribers.

A U.S.-based hedge fund is predicting a hard landing scenario for stock markets despite a steady decline in inflation, with the S & P 500 falling into a bear market. "Livermore views the path forward as the most likely scenario for markets is a hard landing," Neuhauser said in notes to CNBC. The hedge fund manager added that despite this "soft landing" in inflation, "ultimately it's going to lead to a much harder landing with stocks as inflation remains sticky for some time to come." The hedge fund manager identified three global stocks that he believes will perform well if this scenario comes to fruition. Livermore, the hedge fund founded by Neuhauser in 2009, owns shares in Amaroq, along with billionaire investor Louis Bacon.
Colombia's Avianca backs down from Viva Air merger

BOGOTA, May 13 (Reuters) - Colombia's flagship airline Avianca is backing down from a merger with Viva Air, blaming conditions set by the country's aviation regulator, the company announced Saturday. In a statement, Avianca said conditions set by the regulator "would not allow Viva to be a financially and operationally viable airline," and also put Avianca's stability at risk. Colombia's aviation regultaor did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Colombia's aviation regulator approved the merger in late April after repeated delays, with the civil aviation authority objecting to the deal last November, before annulling and reopening the process in January after citing procedural irregularities. Amid the limbo, Viva Air abruptly suspended operations in late February, leaving passengers stranded in airports across the country.

Coming out of the Internet bubble in 2003, Microsoft implemented a dividend for the first time in its then nearly three-decade history. Over the next decade, the software giant slowly hiked that dividend annually, while its shares languished mostly in the 20s. But despite the recent struggle in Alphabet shares, and fears over what lies ahead for the dominant search engine, big investors say a dividend isn't the best use of cash to convince investors to stay the course. Like some of its tech peers, Alphabet could pay a small dividend to "check the box for institutional investors," Meeks said. "Last thing you want to do is commit yourself to a dividend and then all of a sudden retrench it."
